“Beirut survived the war, but it’s not going to survive peace. What survived two decades of war, we are destroying now, in the name of modernity,” Mr Kodieh says.
Across Beirut, hundreds of high-rise buildings have replaced old buildings. The city’s architectural heritage is being wiped out because there is no legislation to protect it.
“What’s happening is very sad, but it’s not in our power to stop it,” says Rasheed Jalekh, representative of the Beirut municipality.

Destroying the architectural heritage is indeed ugly, but is Beirut really turning into an ugly city?
Yea,, just read this article..It’s one thing to say that the new downtown is devoid of any personality, charm, soul..but to say that Beirut itself is turning into an ugly city is pushing it..I don’t appreciate people who make such hasty generalizations..
I’m all about solutions..I keep hearing the same arguments..what are the solutions!!
your blog as well is ugly
Wow Mr. Panini..you just need to STOP.
DownTown is for tourists and Arabs, but i would definitly not want to spend time in Little India (Burj Hammoud). Achrafieh, Jounieh, Jbeil, Batroun are great places to go instead of Beirut.
@ok magazine
