Kawalis Al-Madina – The Real Story Of Al-Madina Bank Scandal

p08_20131128_pic1

I’m not really a fan of Lebanese drama series, but I have lately found Kawalees Al-Madina which recently started airing from Wednesday to Saturday on Al-Jadeed TV quite interesting.

The series is written by Ghada Eid (presenter of Al-Fassad show), and even though the crew denies it but it is mostly based on the true story of Al-Madina Bank collapse between 2002 and 2003 which was mind boggling at that time. Other corruption stories of the kind that went public but never got settled down legally the proper way are mentioned as well, such as the drug ring that was uncovered among AUB students during the same period. I remember the media suddenly stopped talking about that ring because the son of some politician turned out to be involved in it.

The reason I see Kawalis Al Madina so relevant right now is because several scandals were unveiled over the last few months from garbage, to illegal internet, and finally the manipulation of health care bills by corrupt ISF officers, but unfortunately they’re all on the way of being covered up without holding any of the key suspects accountable for their wrongdoings. The biggest proof about that being how incapable is the ongoing investigation about illegal internet in identifying the nature of a stupid fiber optic cable in Nahr El Kalb!

Disregard the lousy acting we always complain about in Lebanese series, but as long as we are unable to punish the corrupt people in authority, I think it is just fair to irritate them by exposing them on TV and let the public know about their sleazy jobs.

Al Jadeed News Fail – Hitler cheered in his grave for Germany’s win!

This is quite weird and awkward! Zeinab Abdel Sater and Jad Ghosn from Al Jadeed TV concluded their report about the world cup final game by stating that Hitler cheered in his grave for Germany’s win! (At the 1m50s mark)

They definitely need to have their reports reviewed before airing next time!

The greatest Chi.N.N episode so far

If you haven’t watched Chi.N.N latest episode yet then make sure to do so now. 30 Minutes is all it took for Salam Zaatari to tell the sad truth about Lebanon nowadays.

Videos and photos from Nejmeh Square today

Protestors gathered at Nejmeh Square today to oppose the extension of parliament’s mandate, but shorty after took things a bit further by throwing tomatoes at the MP’s cars as they were getting out of the area.

One of the protestors, Marwan Maalouf, even tried to set up a tent next to the parliament but was immediately arrested by the Lebanese army.

Below are also some photos taken by Habib Battah.

I wonder which MP was in that Mercedes which apparently took the biggest share of tomatoes!

Snow in Beirut?

Well not really, these are more like graupel or snow pellets, but if we got it while “The Bride” has not reached its peak yet, then I guess we’re definitely getting much more in the next couple of days!

Ukranian woman strips naked in Beirut airport

Ukranian woman in Beirut airport

As per Al-Jadeed, A Ukranian woman was arrested at Beirut airport today after she stripped naked in protest against the smoking ban!

If only our people protested this way instead of burning tires and blocking roads!

Update:

I just read in The Daily Star that some source in the airport claimed this lady was actually protesting  the General Security’s decision to expel her from the country because her residency papers had expired. You can check the article here.

The valet parking mafia in Downtown Beirut

Check out this special report prepared by Rami El-Amine from Al-Jadeed about the valet parkers in Downtown Beirut and how they overpower the parking meter attendants in the area.

Those people take your car and park it anywhere in Downtown Beirut and they never mind the parking meter attendant since those usually never dare to fine a car with a valet parking ticket on it, and don’t ask why! And if a car ever got fined, the valet parker just throws away the fine and hand you the car as if nothing happened. But you of course end up paying it double time at the mecanique.

If this report is not enough reason for you to stop using the valet parking service then I don’t know what is, I know it’s impossible sometimes, but I personally always try to park my car by myself even if I had to walk for a few minutes to reach my destination.

The fourth part of this report is due tonight by the way.

Update:

Here’s the fourth and last part of the report.

Al Jadeed TV fires an employee while on maternity leave

[hana-flv-player video=”http://nowlebanon.com/Library/Files/Interviews/shirine.flv” width=”450″ description=”Al Jadeed TV fires an employee while on maternity leave” player=”5″ autoload=”false” autoplay=”false” loop=”false” autorewind=”true” splashimage=”http://nowlebanon.com/ContentPictures/shirine-102912045234.jpg” /]

Make sure to check out this video from Now Lebanon featuring an ex-employee called Shirine who used to work with the Chi.N.N team in Al Jadeed TV and went on a maternity leave after having a baby, only to be surprised with a phone call during her leave claiming that the Al Jadeed no longer needs her since the person who replaced her is doing the job well and for less money.

I was quite surprised with the story Shirine was telling since Al Jadeed TV is well known for their news reports focusing on malpractices such as the one they did, in addition to the fact that Chi.N.N is known for harshly criticizing the Lebanese society and political scene, and the least you would expect is for them to commit such mistake.

Still, I believe that the reporter Maha Hoteit, whom I deeply respect and have known during school days, should have also covered the other side of the story by interviewing the people in charge at Al Jadeed TV.
