Beirut Digital Distrcit Has a New Little Free Library

I went to Beirut Digital District yesterday and was surprised to find that a new Little Free Library popped up there!

In case you’re not familiar to this initiative, Little Free Library is a worldwide movement that promotes reading by encouraging people to take any of the available books inside that box in exchange of leaving another one. I have earlier spotted a similar library in Horsh Tabet public garden and wrote about it here.

Those who work there are definitely lucky for being to able to exchange old books with new interesting reads for free. Hoping to see more of these libraries in public places!

Minister Hassan Diab: A clear case of megalomania

Looks like minister Hassan Diab felt a bit jealous from Gebran Bassil and decided to create his own book to enlist his “achievements” at the ministry over the past two years. But this time, it isn’t a comic book, it actually a giant one with over 1000 pages! That’s like two pages for every day he spent at the ministry.

Now I feel like releasing a book too, because I didn’t make any notable achievement over the past two years as well!

Gibran Bassil’s new comic book – A nation’s dream

This is hilarious! I’ve been searching for some PDF version of this book ever since Bassam Abou Zaid tweeted about it a few days ago, and just last night, he made a news report about it. The Lebanese ministry of energy and water published a comic book called “A nation’s dream” starring minister Gibran Bassil and his son, telling a story that takes place in 2020 after we became an oil-producing country.

The story starts with Gibran Bassil and his son boarding a metro from Batroun towards Beirut passing by all the projects that Bassil has started, from dams to gas pipes and Beirut’s solar snake, then shows how Zouk became much less polluted and how the public dump in Dora turned into some touristic destination. The story then ends with Gibran Bassil telling how proud he feels to be among the few people who actually contributed into realizing the dreams of this country!

I’m not sure who advises minister Gibran Bassil on such things, but is he/she effing serious?! Morever, I wish the story has started by telling how exactly did Bassil accepted handing over the ministry of energy to someone else.

I totally loved the sarcastic comment by Bassam Abou Zaid at the end of the report by the way.

It’s worth noting though that limiting the best blogs in Lebanon to 10 is quite hard. If it was up to me, I would have included some other cool blogs like Ink On The Side by Sareen, Let’s Talk About Movies by Anis, and Ivy Says by Ivy.

365 Jours pour rester positif au Liban

I was informed about this new agenda called “365 Jours pour rester positif au Liban” (365 Days to remain positive in Lebanon) when the dear people at Tamyras contacted me a while ago to inform me that +961 blog has been mentioned in it, but I never knew what this agenda was really all about until I read Hay Khabriyeh’s post about it last night.

Can you stay positive for 365 days in Lebanon? Tamyras publishers took on the challenge to offer you exactly what you need to do it – an agenda filled with daily upbeat notes. “365 jours pour rester positif au Liban” includes all the constructive social initiatives happening in Lebanon, from cupcake box charity to save Lebanon heritage to Nasawyia, and also fun initiatives like Tchenchol, Pure nostalgia and Lebanese memes.

The idea of the agenda came to Tamyras publishing director, Tania Hadjithomas Mehanna, to counteract all the negativity that was building up around her, be it on social networks, in the news or in her personal circle of acquaintances: she decided to uncover the positive side of Lebanon. There are countless people, groups, NGO’s who haven’t given up, who still wear rose-colored glasses and still dream of a better Lebanon, doing their part to make it happen. So Tamyras staff did an intensive research, gathered the names of positive initiatives, from the humorous to the serious ones, came up with a funky design, and the new agenda was born! Source

Unfortunately I haven’t got the opportunity to get hold of a copy for myself and have no idea yet which day features +961, but I would appreciate it if anyone can send me a shot showing it! turned out I’m featured on March 18th in the agenda. Thanks to Patricia!

Anyway, The idea sounds fun, and I agree with Sietske that it makes a nice gift idea this Christmas! It will be available for sale at major Lebanese bookstores in addition to the “Salon du Livre Francophone” at BIEL which lasts till November 4th 2012.

“The Prophet” to be turned into an animated movie

The Prophet, one of the best selling books of all time by Gibran Khalil Gibran will soon turn into an animated movie to be produced by Salma Hayek, and directed by Roger Allers who previously directed The Lion King. The movie is set to begin pre-production by the end of this month.

The Lion King director Roger Allers has signed on to adapt and direct The Prophet, an animated film Salma Hayek’s Ventanarosa Productions will produce with Clark Peterson and Ron Senkowski. Source

That’s definitely an animated movie to look forward for!

Maya Zankoul’s Amalgam Book Signing

maya-zankoul

Earlier in May I introduced to you Maya’s Amalgam blog authored by Maya Zankoul, a very interesting blog that got exposure from the Future TV and Al-Horra, in addition to getting an interview with NOW Lebanon.

Over the past few weeks we were following the news of Maya preparing a book combining her posts, so it’s going to be her blog on papers! And last week she announced that the book signing will be on August 12 and will take at the Art Lounge. It’s a unique blogging experience I think, and I wish her all the best!

This Amalgam consists in sketches written and illustrated by the Lebanese graphic designer Maya Zankoul (DOB 30/06/1986). Those sketches represent many situations that everyone of us might face in their daily lives, addressing many critics to some of the society’s ugly habits. Everyone of you can actually find himself or recognize a situation that he or she might have encountered in their daily routines.

From the book signing page on the Art Lounge website.

For more details on the event you may visit any of the following links:

Congratulations Maya! 🙂
