#LifeForLife – Help Abaad Change The Prison Sentence for Incestuous Rape

Abaad is a civil movement founded in 2011 that aims to achieve gender equality as an essential condition to sustainable social and economic development in region, and seeks to engage men in ending violence against women. Over the last period, they have been putting efforts to maximize the prison sentence for incestuous rape from 5 years to lifetime.

I personally never knew before seeing this campaign that the Lebanese law punishes such acts with a ridiculous 5 years in prison. Incest rape is probably the worst kind of sexual assaults and is guaranteed to ruin the life of the victim, so it is quite unfair for the perpetrator to be free in 5 years while victims are left with never ending emotional damage for their whole life.

What is also shocking is that as per Abaad, 49% of the sexual assault cases in Lebanon are committed by a close family member. Therefore, chapter 7 of the Lebanese penal code should be amended to at least change the punishment to a harder sentence if not a lifetime.

#Undress522 – An Exhibition by Mireille Honein and ABAAD

Activists supported by ABAAD succeeded back in December to make the parliament agree on a draft law to abolish the controversial penal code article 522 that allow rapists to escape jail time by marrying their victims, and in an attempt to push the parliament to fully approve this law the cooperated with artist Mireille Honein to exhibit 31 paper dresses swaying between the palm trees in Ain El Mraysseh yesterday as a symbol of how unjust is the article 522 to rape victims.

The exhibition was designed in Paris by Honein who brought it to Beirut to support the NGO with the pressure it is exercising to have the legislation abolished.

People who passed by the exhibition were also invited to sign a petition demanding the parliament to prioritize the abolishing of the article, which we all hope to finally seeing it happening during the next legislative session on May 15.

Cat Kicker John Saad Gets a Dose of El 3ama!

You probably have all seen those aweful videos of a guy called John Saad kicking cats just for the fun of it. And it’s quite frustrating that there’s little to be done with such people in the absence of a law that ctiminalizes these acts.

But in the age of social media, viral videos naming and shaming such dumb fucks can sometimes do justice to the poor animals. Case in point, El 3ama’s comment about it!

BBC Pop UP Published Their First Video From Lebanon

Remember when I told you that the BBC Pop Up team are in Lebanon for this month? Well, they published their first video and it’s about homosexuals in the country.

Over the last few years, some judges issued rulings in favor of gay people due to the fact that you simply cannot define what sexual acts really contradict “the laws of nature”, so the report discusses if this is going to offer a better future for the LGBT community in Lebanon.

Penalty Reduction on Mecanique Fees Until February 2017

I rarely give any importance to the laws passed by the Lebanese parliament, but I know this one matters to lot of people and that’s why I’m sharing it here.

The parliament authorized yesterday a reduction on mecanique fee penalties for people who have not paid their dues over the past years. The reduction is expected to be up to 90% and you have until the end of February 2017 to benefit from it.

However note that the inspection centers are currently closed due to the transportation unions strike, so you might have to wait a bit before you can inspect your car and pay your dues.

I just stumbled upon this quite informative article published last week in Al-Akhbar about e-laws in Lebanon.

I believe it is a must read for everyone since the Cyber Crime Bureau in Lebanon has not been only investigating cyber crimes, but also interrogating people for expressing their opinions on social networks and blogs (such as what happened to bloggers like Abir Ghattas, Imad Bazzi, Gino Raidy, and Rita Kamel), and sometimes for simply just sharing some defaming article.

The article basically tells you what this Cyber Crime Bureau is allowed and not allowed to do, and whether the police have the right to search your electronic devices without a warrant, in addition to providing tips on maintaining privacy when surfing the internet.

Gold prospecting is illegal in Lebanon?

I never knew gold prospecting is actually illegal in Lebanon until I came across this piece of news by the National News Agency! Anyone knows the reason for that?

Civil marriage in Lebanon: Walking the talk

So talks about legalizing civil marriage in Lebanon have been ongoing for like a month now since several news outlets reported on the couple, Nidal Darwish and Khouloud Succariyeh, who practiced civil marriage in Lebanon after striking out the mention of their sects from their IDs and getting the necessary paperwork done.

But are we ever going to witness civil marriage being legalized in Lebanon? Or are our politicians just trying to make electoral gains in the upcoming elections by showing support to it? Michael Sleiman, Saad Hariri and many others have made it clear that they do support passing a law for optional civil marriage. But it takes a real politician to walk the talk.

I mean does it take politicians who lead significant parliamentary blocks and are for legalizing the civil marriage too much to put their words to actions? If I were Hariri for example, I would have led a movement to legalize the practice and take all the credits for it! Unless our politicians are just bluffing, and in that case maybe we should just tell them khlosna ba2a!
