Mobile Operators Now Obliged by Court Order to Price Their Services in Lebanese Lira

Beirut’s Court of First Instance, headed by Judge Zulfa Al-Hassan, issued a temporary decision today obliging Alfa and Touch to issue their bills and price all their services (including recharge cards) for the next three months in Lebanese Lira according to the official dollar exchange rate.

This should basically make subscribers’ lives easier until February 2020, and regulate the price of recharge cards since some dealers were overcharging people by selling the cards at higher exchange rates (1,600 and 1700 instead of 1500). It is a good step indeed, but the best solution in my opinion is to stop linking the prices to US dollars and simply setting the prices in Lebanese Lira to avoid all these conversion problems.

I just spotted this new 5,000 pound note which seems to have been recently released.

If only Central Bank of Lebanon would consider making all bills the same (reasonable) size!

I just stumbled upon this cool offer by The Hangout restaurant on Facebook. They’re challenging people to come on February 12th and 13th with an authentic Lebanese Lira which can buy them a platter of their choice on these two days!

I’m sure many people still have authentic liras in their drawers, and I hope there’s no trick behind The Hangout’s offer. Anyway, for more about The Hangout, you can check out their Facebook page here.

The new 20,000L.L bill

I just came across this photo on Facebook showing what looks like a new 20,000 pound note to soon start circulating.

It looks similar to the 50,000 and 100,000 notes and apparently has the same size too, which should be reduced in my opinion.

The ridiculous increase

The General Labor Confederation (GLC) suspended Wednesday’s planned strike after the Cabinet agreed late Tuesday night to increase the minimum wage to LL700,00 ($466) from the current LL500,000. The government also agreed to increase by LL200,00 the wages of those earning less than LLl million, and by LL300,00 those who earn between LL1 million and LL1.8 million. The agreement also included raising the daily transportation allowance to LL10,000 from LL8,000 while the education allowance for children jumped to a maximum of LL1.5 million.

I’m no economics or finance expert, but I’m gonna go ahead and call this increase ridiculous.

Following which logic did our ministers conclude that people of inferior income should get a smaller increase?! And how is this going to minimize the gap between social classes?

Not to mention that if you earn 1,900,000L.L while your colleague gets 1,700,000L.L, he/she is entitled to an increase while you are not, and will soon be earning more than you do according to the new agreement! Pretty fair eh?!
