Lebanon’s first civil marriage

lebanon first civil marriage

It’s hard to believe given our rules and regulations, but this couple, Khouloud and Nidal, did manage to wed by civil marriage in Lebanon after they got the necessary paperwork, which wasn’t an easy job for them by the way. You can check all about it in this article by Now Lebanon, or just read the below summary by Najib to know how did they accomplish that.

Step1: Strike out the mention of both Kholoud’s and Nidal’s sects from their respective IDs to prove before the law that they are not affiliated with a sect that forces them to marry before a religious court. They thus acquired the right to hold a civil marriage as per Article 60 L.R.

Step2: Obtain a form signed by the mayor proving that there are no objections to their marriage and put the marriage announcement up on a billboard 15 days before the wedding date to make sure that there were no objections to it. The announcement was supposed to be published in the Official Gazette or at least two newspapers, but in order to prevent any hindrances, Kholoud and Nidal just posted the announcement on the doors of their parents’ houses and on the door of their own house.

Step3: Obtain a legal document signed by a notary public after both parties chose the articles included in the marriage contract as well as a financial disclosure that guarantees the rights of each party to the marriage.

It’s worth noting that Khouloud and Nidal are still waiting for the Ministry of Interior to officially announce their marriage.

Lebanese Army takes over the LU’s cefeteria in Hadath

lebanese university hadath

According to this article from Now Lebanon, the army took over the Lebanese University’s cafeteria in Hadath after it has been controlled by the Zeaiter clan for a long time now.

NOW also reported the Zeaiter’s had their own office inside the university which apparently contained some stolen electronics!

I just hope the campus will be controlled for good now, even it takes a special force to remain there permanently to keep the Zeaiter’s away forever.

This whole issue by the way started a while ago after several media sources started reporting about the malpractices in Hadath campus.

The wonders of the Lebanese University in Hadath

I can understand the images of March 8 leaders at the Lebanese university faculty of science in Hadath, as it became the norm in Lebanon for the dominant political party at a certain Lebanese University branch to control the student council, and of course put up the images of their leaders all over the place as a way to mark their territory.

But what I really find it disturbing is allowing some people to set up a cellular shop inside the university campus and even worse, remain silent over the occupation of the university’s cafeteria that currently offers shisha! And this is what is actually happening in Hadath.

The below video was shot by a journalist in Now Lebanon who was threatened for taking photos inside the campus, but fortunately she had the balls to publish them online. You may read her article about the whole thing here.

Make sure to also check this additional article published in Al-Akhbar shedding light on similar breaches in the same campus which actually seems like it exists on some other planet where police is never heard of!

With these two articles, I now believe we should never act surprised next time a family announce their own military wing, because a government that cannot control a single campus definitely cannot control 10,452Km2 of land!

Al Jadeed TV fires an employee while on maternity leave

[hana-flv-player video=”http://nowlebanon.com/Library/Files/Interviews/shirine.flv” width=”450″ description=”Al Jadeed TV fires an employee while on maternity leave” player=”5″ autoload=”false” autoplay=”false” loop=”false” autorewind=”true” splashimage=”http://nowlebanon.com/ContentPictures/shirine-102912045234.jpg” /]

Make sure to check out this video from Now Lebanon featuring an ex-employee called Shirine who used to work with the Chi.N.N team in Al Jadeed TV and went on a maternity leave after having a baby, only to be surprised with a phone call during her leave claiming that the Al Jadeed no longer needs her since the person who replaced her is doing the job well and for less money.

I was quite surprised with the story Shirine was telling since Al Jadeed TV is well known for their news reports focusing on malpractices such as the one they did, in addition to the fact that Chi.N.N is known for harshly criticizing the Lebanese society and political scene, and the least you would expect is for them to commit such mistake.

Still, I believe that the reporter Maha Hoteit, whom I deeply respect and have known during school days, should have also covered the other side of the story by interviewing the people in charge at Al Jadeed TV.
