Foreigner Tries Swimming in Beirut, Gets Covered With Shit (Literally)

This cool guy, Georgie Fechter, is Masters of Dirt’s organizer and thought it would be a good idea to go for a swim in Ramlet El Bayda along with his friends while they were here in Beirut during the “BEASTS” event.

In the video you see him walking with excitement all the way from Raouche to Ramlet El Bayda despite a knee injury, and gets all cheerful once he gets to the water. However, moments after he starts swimming, a friend tells him the water tastes awkward and the two get back to the shore only to discover dead fish and pieces of shit everywhere… From there onward their reaction is absolutely priceless! 😀

Start watching at the the 2m08s mark.

I always knew the sea is quite dirty in Ramlet El Bayda by the way but I never knew it was really THAT bad!

Instabeat – The must have gadget for professional swimmers

I just came across this cool project called “Instabeat” by professional swimmer Hind Hobeika.

Hind is a former swimmer who used to train with the American University of Beirut’s swimming team and recognized the need for a monitoring device to track hear rate during her practices. So she came up with Instabeat, a device that is designed to fit any pair of swimming goggles to tracks a swimmer’s heart rate, caloric burn, and number of laps.

During practice, swimmers will be alerted through LED lights as to whether they are performing in fat burning (blue), mid-range (green), or maximum (red) zones. Progress over time can also be visualized after connecting the device to your personal dashboard through a USB port. Future prototypes will allow syncing data to your mobile phone using Bluetooth.

You can read more about Hind Hobeika and her Instabeat device on Intabeat.me. And if you feel like supporting her, you can take part in her indiegogo campaign to raise $35,000 needed for further development of Instabeat.

Thank you @sam_lb

Wassim Nasser FAILED to break the national record

I earlier posted this video by Saida TV claiming that Wassim Nasser did succeed to break the national record by swimming for 47 kilometers from Saida to Beirut while in fact  he actually failed and will be trying to do it once again next year.

“The weather was not good at all and Wassim [Nasser] was swimming against the wind,” Intanious Naafa, Nasser’s friend and representative, told The Daily Star Monday.

Nasser’s aimed to break a record set by Abdel-Latif Abu al-Hauf for swimming 42 kilometers from the southern city of Sidon to Beirut in the 1960s.

He sought to cover 47 kilometers.

The athlete’s route started from a point parallel to Sidon’s Crusader Castle and ended in Ramlet al-Bayda; 8 kilometers less than his original goal.

“Wassim will increase the distance next year and hopefully achieve his goal,” Naafa said, praising his friend for his persistence and great effort in achieving such a task. Source

Still, reaching Ramlet El-Bayda is still quite impressive!

Wassim Nasser did it!

Congratulations! I bet he’s going to be sleeping for a week now!

Update:

The video turned out to be false. Wassim actually failed to break the record, you can read more about it here.

Wassim Nasser, a Lebanese swimmer, is trying to swim 47 kilometers from Saida to Beirut in an attempt to break a national record that was set back in 1960 by Abdel-Latif Abu Al-Hauf who swam 42 kilometers.

According to The Daily Star, Wassim’s journey is expected to take around 11 hours, but it wasn’t clear at what time exactly did he start his trip. Anyway, you can read more about his attempt here.

Freeze end of summer! I will shoot you!

This post should be more like “Freeze Batroun! I will shoot you!” because all the photos below were taken early in October at Batroun, but since none of Batroun landmarks appear in the photos, and due to the fact that I intended to capture photos for the people enjoying the last few days of the Summer in 2009, this post is going to be freezing the end of summer! (And yes I’m 1 month late on publishing it, shame on me!)

Enough with talking, let’s move to the photos.
