What we might be missing about the new 7 wonders

Everyone and their mother is now calling to vote for Jeita to make it among the new 7 wonders of the world, and even celebrities and politicians are getting involved in the voting campaigns.

But we might be missing something here. Let me assume we did manage to secure the needed votes and made a new wonder out of Jeita Grotto, will people around the globe be aware of the new list? And most importantly, will they find it credible enough coming from an organization who has been accused of running scam campaigns (you can just Google it), and having no affiliation with the UNESCO?

And again, assuming we won, the news will make it to the culture page of several international newspapers, but people are most probably going to perceive that article the same way they perceive any other travel and tourism article. And the most genuine list will forever remain the list of  7 wonders of the ancient world, at least to me!

And in case you didn’t know it, we’re currently competing to make it into the list of 7 wonders of nature. Another 7 wonders were elected back in 2007, were you aware of it? (Regardless of the popularity of the chosen places)

So what do you think? Are we overrating that competition?

Yara Khoury at Miss Universe 2011

If you thought Rahaf Abdallah was an exception last year, then take a look at Yara Khoury’s answers at the web interviews in Miss Universe 2011. Looks like acting stupid is the new hot thing, and I say acting because one seriously can’t be that stupid by nature!

Nazl El-Sourour on video

Have you even seen any of Ziad El-Rahbani’s plays on video? Below are 3 videos from the timeless “Nazl El Sourour”.

I never understood why is Ziad refraining from releasing the full videos of his plays. Some claim he’s just waiting to make some good money by selling them if he ever went through a bad time.

Thanks @_kaled

Cheyef 7alak – Honoring Lebanese douchebag drivers

LBC International started a cool new website called “Cheyef 7alak” aimed to track irresponsible drivers. The idea behind the initiative is very simple, whenever you spot some bad driver/biker/pedestrian, take a photo of him/her and upload it to their website or Facebook page, and leave it to them to publish it and give those douchebags the attention they’re seeking!

Given the quality of our driving here, including myself (yeah I won’t pretend I’m the prefect driver here), I’m afraid they’ll get overloaded with photos very soon!

Khaliji guy almost shitting himself drifting with Abdo Feghali

Abdo Feghali’s drifting video with that hot girl is everywhere on blogs and Facebook, and has so far got more than 77,000 views! But what you might have missed is this hilarious video of a Khaliji guy who almost shat himself during the ride!

These videos by the way are from a series by Red Bull as part of a competition they’re holding, you can watch the rest of them here. And you can check this page for their upcoming drifting events in Lebanon over June and July.

Tania Saleh new album launch

Make sure not to miss this one!

Tania Saleh, Lebanese singer – songwriter and Batoota Foundation would like to invite you to the launch of Tania Saleh’s eagerly awaited second studio album “Wehde” along with the music video launch of the album title, at a press conference and CD signing event in Café Im Nazih, Saifi Urban Gardens on Thursday April 21st 2011 from 5 pm to 9 pm.

I’ve been eagerly waiting for Tania’s new album “Wehde” to be released ever since I started hearing news about it one year ago, and just yesterday I got an e-mail about the launching event. Her first album “Tani Saleh” was released in 2002 and remains one of the very few albums that I still play to this day.

And here’s a sneak peek at the upcoming video.

Adonis – Daw El Baladiyyi

Adonis is a collaboration between six Lebanese musicians with a very diverse and eclectic baggage of musical influences.
The band got together in summer 2010, and has been ever since experimenting with language and music, composing and recording, in a constant search for an authentic sound that would highly appeal to the local popular culture, and yet maintain its artistic integrity and vision.

We definitely need more of these bands, and less of Mohamad Iskandar and Najwa Karam!

You can connect with Adonis and listen to more of their music through their Facebook fan page.

Nokia E7 flash mob at City Mall

I personally liked the one performed by the Beirut Duty Free more. I salute the efforts made by the organizers for Nokia’s flash mob, but I would have preferred it to be more natural. It’s not like I’m an expert in making viral videos and stuff, but there’s really no need to perform sophisticated dances, keep it simple like the Dabke in the airport, and allow people to join instead of stressing on the security guards to keep them away of the dancers.
